Dr. Mavrelis is a graduate of the University of Chicago and received his medical degree from Washington University in St Louis. He completed an internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and is board certified in gastroenterology. He has practiced gastroenterology for 40 years, and teaches at Indiana University in West Lafayette. He now concentrates on colon cancer screening.
Dr. Mirro was born and raised in Lowell, Indiana. He received an undergraduate degree from Loyola University of Chicago in 1968, and graduated from Indiana University Medical School in 1972. Dr. Mirro completed an internship, residency in Internal Medicine, and GI fellowship at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He became board certified in Gastroenterology in 1976. Dr. Mirro started a private practice in Crown Point, Indiana, and eventually joined Digestive Medicine Associates in the early 1980s. Most recently, he focuses on colon cancer screenings with Indiana Surgical Associates. Dr. Mirro has been affiliated with Methodist, Community, and Franciscan Hospital Systems. He has been married for 50 years, and has 5 children. Dr. Mirro remains a sports fan (Bears), and is an active golfer. He enjoys traveling with his wife, and is an avid learner of the Italian language.
